Traditional and Classic Art
Classics never go out of style, especially at night. Dürer and Rubens, Greek gods, Romantic paintings of myths and legends, and the villa of a prince of painters: six houses between the Kunstareal and Prinzregentenstraße. Best of all, the shuttle line 90 Zentral stops at every one of them.
Alte Pinakothek
The Alte Pinakothek is one of Europe's most important picture galleries, holding one of the world's largest collections of European painting from the 14th to the 18th century. More than 700 paintings are on view, including major works by Dürer, Rubens, Raphael, Titian and Rembrandt. Right now there's a real bonus: while the Neue Pinakothek is being renovated, its stars are guests on the ground floor of the Alte Pinakothek. That means van Gogh, Caspar David Friedrich, Manet and Monet are part of the deal too: 500 years of art history under one roof.

Glyptothek
King Ludwig I had Leo von Klenze build the Glyptothek for his collection of antiquities. When it opened in 1830, it became Munich's oldest public museum. Behind its freshly restored temple façade lies one of the most famous collections of Greek and Roman sculpture. The Barberini Faun is a must-see, along with the pediment figures from the Temple of Aphaia on Aegina and an impressive gallery of Roman portraits. For a break in between, the café in the Glyptothek has you covered.

Staatliche Antikensammlungen
Directly opposite the Glyptothek, the Staatliche Antikensammlungen are world-famous above all for their Greek vases. This is antiquity up close and everyday: vases, jewellery, bronzes and household objects from the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans bring long-lost worlds back to life. The special exhibition "Sammeln mit Stil" (Collecting with Style) explores the passion for antiquity and art patronage in the 19th century.

Sammlung Schack
Small but a true gem: the poet Adolf Friedrich von Schack collected 19th-century German painting, full of myths, fairy tales and Romantic longing. Masterpieces from the Neue Pinakothek are on display here too at the moment. From 8 to 11 pm it's "Nachts im Museum" (Night at the Museum): speakers from the Bayerische Hörbücherei (Bavarian Audiobook Library) explore the literature behind the paintings. Fine listening for anyone who loves to wander through a museum. The programme is in German.

Bayerisches Nationalmuseum
The Bayerisches Nationalmuseum is one of Europe's major museums of art and cultural history. Its permanent collection ranges from medieval sculpture, including works by Tilman Riemenschneider, to ivory, goldsmiths' work and porcelain, all the way to armour and historical fashion. Its nativity scene collection is famous too. From 6 pm there are drinks and snacks at the Camattibar, and from 7 pm to 1 am the Anarchist Brass Collective plays in the foyer. In the Mars-Venus Hall, the improv opera "La Triviata" runs at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 pm, 30 minutes each. Plus hourly guided tours from 7 to 11 pm: Wittelsbach princes at the lathe, fashion from cashmere shawls to wasp waists, pigeons in art, the state furniture of the Blue Elector, and the arms and armour of medieval knights.

Museum Villa Stuck
The villa of the "prince of painters" Franz von Stuck has been freshly renovated and is brighter and more open than ever. Stuck designed it himself as a total work of art, with architecture, art and living all cast from one mould. The MVHS offers tours of the historic rooms at 6 and 9 pm, as well as of the exhibitions "No Single View" by Ilit Azoulay at 7:30 pm and "Zehn Leben" (Ten Lives) at 10:30 pm. Feeling hungry?
