Modern Art
Kandinsky, Warhol, street art and an entire studio in red: if modern and contemporary art is more your thing, there's plenty to discover between the Kunstareal, the old town and the English Garden. Seven houses for modern and contemporary art, plus a tip for anyone up for a detour to Solln.
Lenbachhaus und Kunstbau
Munich's municipal gallery is housed in the former villa of painter Franz von Lenbach on Königsplatz, complemented by the underground Kunstbau. It's home to the world's largest collection of the Blue Rider: Kandinsky, Münter, Marc and their companions show just how thrilling the dawn of modernism was. Also on view are "Was zu verschwinden droht" (What Threatens to Disappear) with 19th-century works and "Shifting the Silence" with contemporary art. From 6 pm to midnight, the Laterne is open too: at "Up in die Laterne!" you can join in, read, have a drink or simply take a break.

Museum Brandhorst
You can spot Museum Brandhorst from afar thanks to its façade of thousands of colourful ceramic rods. Behind it lies one of Germany's most important collections of contemporary art, with works by Andy Warhol, Rineke Dijkstra, Laura Owens and many more. A highlight is Cy Twombly's Lepanto cycle, which has its own room. The exhibition "Long Story Short" takes you through art from the 1960s to today, putting never-before-shown works in dialogue with the museum's icons. In "Carrying", international artists take over historically charged spaces in and around the museum, including the Türkentor.

Pinakothek der Moderne
The Pinakothek der Moderne is one of Europe's largest museums for 20th- and 21st-century art, architecture and design. Four museums share one roof and more than 13,000 square metres of exhibition space: art, graphic art, architecture and design. In "Between & Beyond", the exhibition space itself becomes part of the art, with works by Dan Flavin, Lucio Fontana and around 20 other artists from 1960 onwards. In "Design of the Unusual", Dutch duo Klarenbeek & Dros combine living organisms with modern technology, while "CONVIVIUM" shows in twelve chapters how our food is produced today. Plus there's a programme of activities: "UNEXPECTED" from 6 to 9 pm, museum conversations at "talk talk" from 7 to 9 pm, and "Open4Making – We Are the Robots!" from 7 to 10 pm.

Sammlung Goetz / Schaufenster
The Sammlung Goetz is one of Europe's most important private collections of contemporary art, and its Schaufenster in the city centre hosts changing exhibitions. Currently on view is Los Angeles-based artist Sterling Ruby. His work refuses to stick to one medium: sculptures, ceramics and bronzes, collages, textile works and huge spray-paint canvases. The selection spans 2008 to 2016 and offers a compact insight into his
