Renamed: Street Names and the Culture of Remembrance in Munich After 1945

This exhibition at the LMU University Library is inviting visitors to explore the city map as a reflection of historical debates and contemporary struggles over interpretation and memory. On the one hand, as early as June 1945, Munich residents proposed naming the squares in front of Ludwig Maximilian University after Hans and Sophie Scholl and Professor Kurt Huber. On the other hand, there are still streets in Munich today that bear the names of figures associated with antisemitism and colonialism. The exhibition examines how street names shape public memory and reveals the ongoing dialogue about how history is remembered and commemorated in urban space.
